For GPs

We value collaboration with GPs in supporting patients to access timely and comprehensive psychiatric care. To ensure an efficient referral process, please review the following information before sending a referral.

Patient eligibility

Before referring, please check the following:

Age: We see patients aged 6 years and above. There is no fixed upper age limit—suitability is assessed individually based on safety and telehealth appropriateness.

Location: We accept referrals Australia-wide for general psychiatric care.

Billing: Sage Clinic is a private billing service. Patients must pay the full fee upfront and claim their own Medicare rebate. We do not offer bulk-billing.

GP Co-prescribing: We work in partnership with referring GPs, in line with the prescribing requirements for each state.

Medicare Item: Initial assessments are billed under Item 291. Please ensure the referral requests a psychiatric opinion and management plan.

Additional information for high-risk or complex cases

Please include extra details, if applicable:

Alcohol use: Number of standard drinks per week, plus history, stability, and any treatment. For ADHD referrals, stimulant prescribing requires <15 standard drinks/week.

Substance use: Past substances used, frequency, duration, abstinence period, and treatment. Stimulant prescribing requires substance-free status for at least three-months.

Eating disorders: Diagnosis, current status, BMI (>18 for restrictive disorders), and confirmation of stability and ongoing medical monitoring. Include a letter from the patient’s psychologist or dietitian where possible.

Cardiac or neurological history: Diagnosis details. Cardiologist or neurologist clearance may be required prior to commencing stimulants.
